Notary Questions

Frequently Asked

ID, witnesses, and what a Florida notary can and cannot do.

What ID do I need?

A current government-issued photo ID that includes your signature. A Florida driver license, Florida ID card, U.S. passport, foreign passport, or military ID all work. If you have no acceptable ID, Florida allows a credible witness who knows you and has their own valid ID — tell me in advance if that is your situation.

Do I need witnesses for my document?

Many Florida documents do. Wills, most powers of attorney, and some real estate documents require two witnesses. I can arrange witnesses for $25 each if you request them in advance. A witness cannot be someone named in the document.

Should I sign my document before the appointment?

No. Please bring it complete but unsigned. I witness every signature myself, which means I need to see you sign. If a document arrives already signed, we may have to reprint it, so it is worth waiting the extra few minutes.

What does a notarization cost?

Florida sets a statutory maximum notarial fee of $10 per act. My $45 mobile fee covers travel and the first notarization, with $10 for each additional one. Remote online notarization is $50, with $25 for each additional notarization in the same session.

What can a notary not do?

I cannot give legal advice, choose or prepare a document for you, tell you what to file, or certify copies of vital records such as birth, death, or marriage certificates — those come from the issuing agency. I also cannot notarize a document for myself or where I have a financial interest.

Do you speak Spanish?
